There are a hundred words in the English language which are used more commonly than any others and represent over 50% of all words in all texts, with the first 16 covering 25% of the total. This list can be downloaded by right-clicking here and selecting "Save Target As..."

They are usually referred to as "sight words" or "sight vocabulary" as they are best learned to be read at sight rather than breaking them down phonetically. Of these 100 words, only 23 can be represented pictorially : these are shown in red on a second list which you can download here.

The following pages give practice in the least ambiguous of these sight words.
